Blessing of the “Chariots“ on St Elijah Day - July 20, 2024
Many of our parishes honor the memory of St Elijah by blessing their own "chariots."
As we read in the Old Testament, the Prophet Elijah was taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot. Therefore, many Orthodox communities around the world will honor him by blessing their various modes of transportation on, or near, his feast day, July 20, with the hopes of safe travels.
With the feast falling on a Saturday, some are holding a service on the day itself, while many are waiting until the next day following the Sunday Divine Liturgy. Due to other previously scheduled events, St John the Baptist in Canonsburg will be holding theirs at the Sunday prior. Check the schedule at your local parish to see if and when your community will hold such an event.
