"Prothesis" Lesson in Weirton - February 11, 2024

As part of the day's parish education lesson on Sunday February 11, Father Andrew Nelko, Rector of St. Nicholas Church in Weirton, moved the service that prepares the gifts of bread and wine for use in the Divine Liturgy, from behind the iconostasis to outside of it for the faithful to see and to learn.  Since the Prothesis, or Proskomede, service is required to occur before Divine Liturgy begins, and, for good order, usually performed inside of the altar area on a non-consegrated table (different from the consecrated altar table itself), very few faithful get to hear the prayers and see the steps of the setting aside of the piece of bread to will become the Lamb and the wine to be the Blood of offering and communion.

To learn more yourself of the steps that your priest goes through to prepare for the Divine Liturgy, read the section on Prothesis in the OCA's "Rainbow Series" Volume II: Worship.
